Adopting My Dog And Cat

I remember going to the shelter when I was 8 years old. I can still visualize walking down the halls filled with kennels, wanting to take all of the dogs home. We spent all day looking at the dogs and cats trying to decide which ones to take home. I, of course, thought we neeeded all of them. After a couple hours, we were deciding on one of three dogs to adopt. There was one brown dog my mom was looking at from outside his kennel. When she approached him, he immedeately layed down. He waited for her to scratch his belly. Every time she tried to leave, he would give her his puppy dog eyes. This instantly meant there would be another round of petting. After an hour of hanging out in his kennel, we knew this was the dog for us.
We had gone to the shelter for one dog, and one cat. We went into the room full of cats, playing with the toys in the room. Suddenly, I locked eyes with the cutest kitten in the room. She had striped around her back, just like a tiger. Once I sat down, she crawled on my lap and layed down. I started petting her, and after about 10 minutes, she fell asleep. I got up and told my mom that we had to have her. She told me to be patient, but I knew she was the one we were going to adopt. After looking around at the other cats, we decided to adopt her.
The papers felt like they took an eternity to sign. There was form after form we needed to sill out. Finally, after all the forms were signed and filled out, we had officially adopted two beautiful pets. One the car ride home, we had a debate one what we should name our pets. My 7 year old sister suggested Neptune and Jupiter, in her class they just happened to be studying planets.
We took a vote, and decided my cat would be named Neptune, and our dog would be named Jupiter. When we brought them home, Jupiter started running around the house. He was so excited and nervous because of the new surrondings. I got extremely scared of him, and jumped up on the counter. I stayed on the counter for about an hour, terrified of coming down. Once I finally got down, I found Neptune. She was sitting on top of the washing machine, asleep. It took me a couple weeks to get used to what having pets meant. It meant getting up early to take the dog on walks before the bus came, feeding them every day and night, making sure they had water. And also making sure Jupiter didn't eat anyones shoes. I'm so glad my sister and I convinced our parents to get pets. They have made my life so much more interesting and fun. I am blessed to have them in my life everyday.

  1. I like the story of these pets coming into your life. I would have been interested in reading HOW they impact your life...the good, the bad, and the ugly (who loves scooping poop?). I think the story of their adoption is fine, but when you have a chance, explore your feelings and let them come out in your writing. Good story though!!
