1. Summarize the reading in a couple of sentences
Video games have now been classified as addictive by health officials. Many health officials see this as a chance to make progress and help more people. Video games are targeted towards young, developing brains and the younger kids start to play these games, the more addicting they become.
2. What are the indications of the disorder, according to the article?
There are three indicating of the disorder, one being increasing attention to gaming to the point where it takes priority over other activities. Another being the difficulty to quit playing the game despite negative consequences, or constantly losing or not liking the game. The last one is not being able to control how frequent or how much you play the game.
3. What is an addiction, according to the article?
The compulsion to do something. It is not tied to a substance like drugs or alcohol, but by how bad someone wants to do something. For example, play a video game. Some people do not think video games can be an addiction, because there is no substance being involved. This definition clearly shows that no substance has to be involved in order to consider something an addiction.
4. Do you think video games are a serious problem?
I believe that playing video games can become a serious problem, but the act itself is not a dangerous thing. I think that if the video games are abused or played too much then it can become a problem. This is especially evident in young children because their developing brains can become impaired by this action. I think that video games are becoming more and more of a serious problem as children are introduced to them at younger and younger ages. Videos games do not properly allow developing children to develop cognitive or problem solving skills. This is a serious problem because both of those are essential for people to learn at young ages.
5. Do you play video games? If so, what are your favorites (asking for a friend, lol)
I do not play video games.
6. Do you have friends who you think might be addicted to video games?
I do not have friends that I think are addicted to video games. However, I babysit and a lot of the time I will see children that would rather play on their device than play a board game or go outside. These young children could possibly be becoming addicted to their devices as they start to use them more and more.
7. What are some solutions, according to the article.
One suggestion was to provide a list of activities or chores the child must do before they can play on the device. This helps them limit screen time, which was also another solution that was suggested. It is said that children should limit their screen time to 1-2 hours each day, or a total of 14 hours a week. If the device is seen as a reward, the video games are seen as less addictive.
