Cyclone Victor 

The citizens of Honiara are trying to recover after a Cyclone traveling at 140 kilometers hit the island, killing six people. 

"We are devastated that our son, Frank, was killed," Mother of one of the men killed, Lisa Ramos said. 

Three men died due to drowning when their cars were blown off the road and into a river, another man and two women were killed by the flying debris. 

"We have heavy hearts over the six people who lost their lives today," Police chief Marianna Adams said. 

Cyclone Victor was discovered at 2am yesterday morning by the Nadi Weather Centre. 

"It was a fast developing front that we could not have anticipated any faster," Nadi Weather Centre Director James Jones said. 

Although the cyclone was anticipated quickly, officials could not stop the damage on the island. As a result of of this, six people lost their lives. 

"We have heavy hearts over the six people who lost their lives today,"  Adams said. 

Another 18 people have been sent to the hospital due to minor injuries, and more than 100 are now homeless. Honiara is believed to be substantially damaged from the cyclone. 

"We will hold prayer services each night at 6 p.m. until we have everyone back in a stable home." Local pastor Harold Young said. 

The cyclone destroyed more than 20 houses, and many buildings sustained considerable damage from Cyclone Victor. 

"The church is open to anyone who has lost their home and need a place to stay," Young said. 

As soon as the cyclone was discovered, officials warned the citizens. Officers went door to door and also broadcasted on the radio about the approaching cyclone. 

"I want to commend all of our local emergency workers for their efforts," Adams said.

Honiara has started the "Mopping-up" operations. It is believed that Honiara was the district most affected by Cyclone Victor. 

"It was pretty chaotic for a few hours there when the storm hit the community," Adams said.
