Captain Phillips Movie Review

All Hands On Deck for “Captain Phillips”
By: Grace Youngblood
In “Captain Phillips”, Captain Richard Phillips or, Tom Hanks, is the head captain of the Maersk Alabama. The ship is approached by Somalian pirates who plan to take the workers hostage and steal the ship that they were on. The Somalian Pirates brought two ships on their first attempt to take over the ship. In an effort to disencourage the pirates, the crew members put high pressure hoses around the perimeter of the vessel and change their direction and speed multiple times. They are successful in discouraging the pirate’s the first time. However, the leader of the first ship, Abduwali Muse or, Barkhad Abdi attempts to go back and capture the ship the next day. In his second venture, Muse and his crew find an area where a hose is not spraying towards them. They are able to get their ladder onto and aboard the ship. The first thing the Somalian Pirates do is search the ship and break into the bridge, the Somalian pirates take Shane Murphy or, Michael Chernus hostage along with the captain. They make Phillip show them around the ship and find the rest of the crew members. Little did the pirates know, the crew members were hiding in the bottom of the ship. As the crew members move around the ship, they were able to take Muse as a hostage. They kept him in the engine room until they were able to discuss a trade off with the pirates. The crew members and pirates came to a conclusion that the pirates would trade Phillip and the crew members would trade Muse. The pirates, including Philip went aboard the lifeboat, and when Muse was handed back, Najee or, Faysal Ahmed, hit Phillip so he could not escape. They took off with Philip in tow. Philip made an escape attempt to get off the boat, but was recaptured and tied up. The Navy approached the pirates in a similar life boat and attempted to reason with the pirates. When it seemed like all hopes that Phillip would come back alive were lost, you’ll have to watch the movie to find out what the Navy did. With a high intensity and hype movie, it is recommended to everyone above the age of 13. Although the plot is semi predictable, twists and turns were taken that invoke the interest of the moviegoer. I would give this story 4 stars. The desire to escape was a very prevalent theme occuring in the movie. Muse wanted to make money so he could escape his town, and when the Somali pirates caught up to Captain Phillip, he wanted to escape them so he would not get caught. I think that the movie was done very well and the actors conveyed emotions of hopelessness and fear accurately. The back story built around Captain Phillips and his family provides a deeper connection with him. It makes whoever is watching the movie genuinely concerned for the outcome of these events.
